For years, I thought butler service was one of those upgrades that sounded nice but wasn’t really necessary. You know the type. The kind of upgrade people choose because they want to feel fancy. The kind of thing you politely nod your head about while secretly thinking: “I can make my own dinner reservations.” “I can get my own drink.” “I can unpack my own suitcase.” And honestly, I wasn’t wrong. I can do all of those things.

Then one trip completely changed my perspective. I was attending a destination wedding in the Caribbean as a guest. Well… sort of. As often happens in my world, I was also the travel advisor who helped coordinate the group. A few days before the wedding, disaster struck. The bride’s best friend—her right hand throughout the entire planning process—and her entire family of seven tested positive for COVID and couldn’t travel. 

Just like that, one of her biggest support systems was gone. The wedding planner wasn’t there. The best friend wasn’t there. The family wasn’t there. Everyone rallied around the bride, and I found myself stepping in wherever I could. One of the best ideas we came up with was bringing my laptop to the wedding so the family back home could attend through Zoom. Simple idea. Not-so-simple execution. The wedding day arrived. 

The ceremony was running late. Very late. The bride was more than thirty minutes behind schedule. The Caribbean sun was showing absolutely no mercy. And there I sat. Outside. In a full-length sequined gown. Trying to coordinate Zoom. Trying to support the bride. Trying not to melt. I was hot. I was thirsty. And I couldn’t exactly get up and leave. So I pulled out my phone and sent a text. “Can you bring me a lemonade with lots of ice?” A few minutes later, here came my butler. Tall glass. Extra ice. Exactly what I needed.

Now before you laugh and say: “Leslie, that’s your big butler story?” Stay with me. Because it wasn’t about the lemonade. The lemonade was just the delivery. The real value was convenience.
